Kuttettan and Unniyappam
The journey begins from the place known as ‘Thettu Road’ (It is a road junction which separates Thirunelli and Koorg). The main attraction of this place is ‘unniyappam’ (sweetful local snack) made by Kuttettan. Since a long time his tea shop is acting as a resting place for the pilgrims to Thirunelli temple. It is with great risks involved that he maintains his tea shop in the middle of thick forests. These ‘unniyappams’ made by Kuttettan has gained popularity all over Kerala. No one trespasses Thirunelli without having at least one of these ‘unniyappams’ made in a traditional method by mixing jaggery, coconut, rice, bananas, cardamom etc. We could see and learn how this dish is made.
Kerala Breakfast
After having ‘idli and sambar’ along with the special ‘unniyappam’ we move towards the house of Javanayya Gowder, a traditional farmer. This big house roofed with grass can only be seen in this part of Wayanad. The house which has been divided into three parts is completely constructed with bamboo and timber. For roofing this house once we require more than thousand sets of grass
Cattle Farm
Another attraction includes the cattle population in the house premises. Gowder a popular tribal community owns almost 90 cattle. Different kinds of agricultural cultivation are also done around the house. There is a very vast paddy field in front of the house. The forest shares its boundaries with these paddy fields. We could often see deers and elephants in this area. Coffee, pepper, coconut, areca nut, great variety of chilies is also cultivated here.
Kaleeshari Temple
The third phase of the journey is towards ‘Kaleeshwari temple’. This ancient temple is situated in the middle of the forest. The architecture and sculptures really define the legacy of this temple. There are also many sculptures which is said to be destructed during the invasion of Mysore King Tippu Sultan.
Thirunelli Temple
Then we move towards the Thirunelli temple which is known as ‘Southern Kashi’. Thousands of people visit this Mahavishnu temple in the Brahmagiri hills to perform crematory rituals of their dear ones. The presence of Trimurthis- Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu is a factor which attracts a large number of pilgrims towards this temple.
Naxal Varghese
After visiting Thirunelli temple we move to the Tamarind hotel of KTDC for lunch. Next we intend to visit ‘Appappara’ which was the center of naxal Varghese, the most famous naxal activist of Kerala. We can know about history and battles of Varghese by visiting the Warrier family along with the history of Warrier society. Next we will visit Panavalli village.
Kalindhi River
The scenic beauty of the Kalindhi river which flows towards the Kabani river can be enjoyed from here. A bath in this clear water is really refreshing. The view of vast fields also creates a great impression.
